What happend with your clothes after you done with them?
To start the project we gathered worn out sportswear from our customers. We then turn them into soil by putting them in a compost. From the soil we grew vegetables and created the world’s first fine dining experience grown from old clothes.
At Houdini, we always use pure wool without synthetics. Wool is nature’s own performance material, keeping you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot, and naturally odor resistant. This makes our wool garments completely circular. No waste is created, just as nature intended
We removed the elastic from the clothes and put the remaining fabric into the compost. In the compost you have millions of bacteria and microscopic fungi that turns the fabric into it’s original substances and creates a fertile soil.
It’s important that you do not use material which contains toxic substances because it can destroy they process and makes the compost material unusable.
The soil was used as a fertilizer which we mixed with normal planting soil. Since it is very nutritious, it is important to not use too much. Make sure to look up what soil and conditions the vegetables or herbs you choose grows best in.
My opinion is that we can do very much without great suffering, if we just know more about the environment and we are a little more conscious about what we are doing
The actual menu in the Houdini Menu-project was composed and executed by chef Sebastian Thureson. Simplicity and honesty were keywords that resulted in a fantastic dinner experience. Take the first step towards cooking it for yourself by downloading the menu.
This is a taste of the future, to be able to cook from things we recycle.
You can also eat our old sportswear! Go to your closest Houdini store to get a start up pack of Houdini-soil when you buy any of our new collections. Use it to grow vegetables and herbs and cook yourself a nice dinner from our old ones. It comes complete with the recipes served.
